Chapter 9

Frosty

My gaze is currently fixed on Oscar's lifeless body lying on the cave floor. It takes me a few moments to realize that Oscar is still breathing because my mind is racing with all of Kassie's frustration, rage, and confusion. Whatever he did to himself, it wasn't suicide. This fact, however, does not help me in the least, only raising more questions about what he did and why. Bending down, I grab him under both arms, hauling him to his feet, and Kassie's mouth drops open in surprise as she stares at me.

"He is not dead, Kass. I do not know what he did, but he is not dead. Look at him." I move his body so she can see the steady rise and fall of his chest.

"Yet." Sometimes, I swear Kassie growls exactly like her wolf mate.

"My Treasure, we need this idiot taken back and locked up until we know what we are doing with him. Can you please see to that?"

"Yeah, no problem. Eshaq is in the clearing. I will carry him over, and he can fly him back to the clutch. It will only take a few minutes." Cato doesn't sound like himself, but I cannot imagine that any of us do right now.

His voice still has that unusual reverberation when he speaks, but a certain something is missing. Kassie's head jerks up to look at him, and I know it is not just me who notices. There is something empty in his words. There was a lot of violence that just took place, plus whatever it is that just went down with Oscar here. I want to try to soothe him, I really do, but right now, I have to know how Xita and Aman are doing. In her panicked attempt to save him, she may have done incredible damage to herself.

"I have to go for a few, My Treasure. I have to check on Xita and Aman. I will be back as soon as I can." I release Oscar into his hands and watch as he nods and walks off with him. My eyes go to Kassie, whose look of hurt and confusion must match my own.

"He didn't even kiss you goodbye." She whispers to me, but I know he hears her because his step falters just once, but he keeps moving away.

Prayer appears, and she hugs both of us tightly for a moment. Sebastian shifts quickly, and even though he is completely naked, he bends down and picks up what is left of Soraia's body. Not even an ounce of pity or regret passes through me at the sight of her. She could have killed any of us while our backs were turned and did, in fact, try. Without a word, Prayer whisks us back to Xita's lab, and as soon as my eyes focus, I see Xita being held tightly by Leander, who is now wearing a set of scrubs. I cannot stop my eyes from searching the room until they land on the body of Aman lying on one of the worktables.
